Today is the 57th anniversary of the first patent on the bar code, and Google has a new logo to celebrate the birth of bar code. The inventors Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver filed the patent on October 1949, and it was granted on October 7, 1952.

There is no doubt that this is definitely going to be the strangest looking Google Doodle ever.

The Google barcode above is Code 128 encoded, which is a standard way of encoding ASCII character strings (ie. A-Z, a-z, 0-9, etc.) into a barcode. Let’s try to generate a ‘Google’ barcode with a free barcode generator to see whether there is any similarity with Google’s new logo.
